Since 2013, VANEPS has been actively involved in the implementation of the Electricity and Drinking Water Act BES. In August 2013, a consultation reaction was submitted, in which lawyer Tom Peeters identified several bottlenecks regarding the implementation of the Act on the BES Islands. The legislator copied most suggestions and on 22 April 2016 the Act was adopted and published in the Bulletin of Acts and Decrees. The law is expected to come into effect on 1 July 2016.

In order to give everyone in Bonaire the opportunity to be informed about the content and the possible consequences of the Act for various companies, VANEPS organized a seminar at our office in Bonaire on 31 May 2016. Lawyers Tom Peeters and Thies Leijsen informed those present, representatives of sixteen different companies, on the impending changes. Tom Peeters concluded the seminar with the following words: “A lot of new regulations are introduced on the BES, and these do not always demonstrate an understanding of local circumstances. Fortunately, this Act is an exception, given the extensive consultation that has taken place. Our firm follows the legislative changes closely, so that we are able to inform our clients of the consequences of these changes for their businesses in time.”
