On August 16th, 2018, VANEPS and the St. Maarten Hospitality and Trade Association (SHTA) organized another successful employment law seminar at the premises of SHTA in St. Maarten. The well-attended event focused on the formation and elements of an employment agreement, the termination of an employment agreement and St. Maarten employment law in general.

After the SHTA welcomed the attendees, Thies Leijsen addressed the formation and the various important aspects of an employment agreement, for example the duration of the agreement (definite vs. indefinite period), trial periods, unilateral changes clause  and the calamity clause. Finally, Daniella Engelhardt presented the various ways of terminating employment agreements in St. Maarten, amongst which the termination by giving notice and the immediate dismissal for urgent reasons.  Recent court cases were discussed, inter alia related to the consequences of hurricane Irma for employers in St. Maarten. The well-attended masterclass was closed with a round of questions and a reception. For questions about the discussed topics of the masterclass or for assistance with other legal matters, VANEPS will gladly assist you.
