Celebrating its 80th birthday, VANEPS has welcomed two new colleagues in this anniversary year: professional support lawyer Mariette Hazejager-Steeg has strengthened the office in St. Maarten and junior associate Renata Nieuw has taken up post in Curaçao.

Before she moved to St. Maarten in 2016, Mariette worked for eleven years as a junior civil-law notary at Houthoff Buruma in Amsterdam. At VANEPS she will support the team of lawyers with the development of know-how, for example, but also with advice in complex cases. Mariette specializes in particular in commercial real estate transactions, but also has experience in corporate transactions and financing.

On 4 April 2017, Renata Nieuw was sworn in by the Joint Court of Justice of Curaçao, Aruba and St. Maarten and of Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba, becoming the latest addition to the Curaçao team of VANEPS. Born and raised in Curaçao, Renata graduated in private law and employment law at the University of Tilburg and then returned to her native island to join our firm as a junior associate. Renata says the following about her swearing-in ceremony: “It was a special moment and a milestone that I have been looking forward to for a long time. The swearing-in was a very impressive event and is something that I’ll remember for the rest of my life. I’m happy that I’ll now be able to officially act as an attorney at law and can plead in the Court.” The day after being sworn in Renata supported a client in the courtroom for the first time and the experience was very positive. “For the coming years it’s my ambition to become a good litigator and to further specialize in employment law.”
